A Life Teaching, Leading, and Believing

ree

Eira Rodriguez didn’t just teach math; she shaped futures, nurtured confidence, and poured heart into every equation. For over 30 years, she brought numbers to life for thousands of students, proving that mathematics isn’t just about correct answers; it’s about perseverance, self-belief, and seeing possibilities where others see limits.

Born in Cananea, Sonora, and arriving in Phoenix just before turning four, Eira’s early experience in school wasn’t easy. She entered kindergarten without speaking English. Though school was intimidating at first, one memory became a turning point: her father, after a crushing moment at an awards ceremony where her name was never called, gently reminded her, “As long as you know math, you will be able to do anything in life.” That wisdom stayed with her forever.

Eira didn’t just learn math; she fell in love with it. Encouraged by ASU’s Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program and mentored by the trailblazing Dr. Joaquin Bustoz, she saw education as both an opportunity and an obligation to uplift her community. She became a standout student, earning top honors at Carl Hayden High School, and even took college-level calculus at ASU, despite her high school not offering the course. But rather than pursue a distant dream, Eira returned home to teach where she was needed most—Carl Hayden High School.

For 24 years at Carl Hayden and six more at ASU Preparatory, Eira turned classrooms into safe havens of encouragement and excellence. Her mission was clear: empower Hispanic students by teaching one of the most challenging subjects, and in doing so, give them the skills and confidence to excel in college and beyond. Her teaching wasn’t just about formulas; it was about mindset. “If you don’t get the correct answer the first time, keep trying until you find the right solution,” she would say. Her students didn’t just leave her classroom with academic skills—they went with grit, purpose, and belief in their potential.

Eira wasn’t content staying inside the boundaries of her curriculum. She mentored future teachers through university partnerships, served as a sponsor for the National Honor Society, and supported the nationally acclaimed Falcon Robotics Team. Her proudest initiative? A tutoring program pairing her high school students with 4th and 5th graders, cultivating role models and boosting math scores and self-esteem across generations.

But her impact went even deeper. Eira was often the steady voice for students facing life’s most fragile moments. When a student in her care expressed thoughts of suicide, Eira’s swift and compassionate action changed that student’s path. Their bond endured for years, Eira offering mentorship, friendship, and above all, presence.

It’s that presence her students remember most. Decades later, they still find her at dentist appointments, in grocery stores, or walking into cardiology clinics, where they greet her with hugs and updates about their lives. For them, she’s more than a math teacher. She’s a trusted adult, a safe place, a role model who believed in them when others didn’t.

Even in retirement, Eira’s love for students hasn’t faded. She misses the classroom, the energy of young minds, and the shared joy of “aha” moments. What she doesn’t forget: the paperwork. What she holds dear: the legacy of kindness, consistency, and academic rigor she left behind.

To new teachers, her advice is timeless: get to know your students and their families, be prepared every single day, create structure, but never forget to show your heart. Teaching isn’t just instruction, it’s invitation, inspiration, and transformation.

Eira Rodriguez will be remembered not just for what she taught, but for how she made others feel. Her classroom was a space where self-worth was calculated in effort, not just scores. She gave students the tools to solve problems in math and in life.
