The Responsibility of Care

For more than four decades, Dr. Paul Underwood has dedicated his life to advancing cardiovascular medicine, improving patient outcomes, and expanding access to care. Yet to define his legacy solely through medicine would be to overlook the broader impact of a man whose work has consistently extended beyond the walls of hospitals, clinics, and research institutions.

His journey reflects a lifelong commitment to service, one shaped by education, driven by curiosity, and sustained by a belief that knowledge carries a responsibility to improve the lives of others.

A Foundation Built on Education

Growing up on the campus of Knoxville College in Tennessee, Dr. Underwood developed an early appreciation for the transformative power of education. It was a lesson that would remain with him throughout his life.

A graduate of Morehouse College, he went on to earn his medical degree from Mayo Clinic in Rochester before completing his cardiology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Those formative experiences provided not only world-class clinical training, but also an enduring standard of excellence that would guide every chapter of his career.

While medicine would become his profession, service would become his calling.

Advancing Care Where It Was Needed Most

Throughout his career, Dr. Underwood has repeatedly found himself at the intersection of innovation and opportunity.

While serving as Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit Director at St. Croix Hospital, he introduced thrombolytic therapy for patients experiencing acute heart attacks and helped secure the island's first cardiac treadmill; advancements that expanded access to lifesaving cardiovascular care for the local community.

Those accomplishments were not driven by recognition but by a simple principle: patients deserve access to the best possible care, regardless of geography.

That same mindset would continue to shape his work for decades to come.

Bridging Medicine and Innovation

After relocating to Phoenix, Dr. Underwood founded Eclipse Clinical Research Associates, combining clinical practice with research to help advance emerging therapies and technologies.

His work eventually expanded into the medical technology sector, leading to collaborations that explored new possibilities during the early years of mobile health innovation.

In 2009, he joined Boston Scientific, where he contributed to clinical trials, regulatory submissions, and product launches involving interventional cardiology and structural heart technologies. His work helped bring innovative treatments from concept to clinical application, impacting patients far beyond any single practice or community.

For Dr. Underwood, innovation has never been about technology alone. It has always been about creating better outcomes for people.

Championing Health Equity

Throughout his career, Dr. Underwood has remained a steadfast advocate for equitable access to evidence-based care.

His leadership has extended into public policy, community engagement, and national advocacy efforts focused on reducing disparities in healthcare outcomes. From supporting legislation that expanded access to automated external defibrillators in public spaces to participating in initiatives focused on stroke prevention and awareness, his efforts have consistently aimed to ensure that quality care reaches those who need it most.

His perspective is grounded in a belief that excellence in healthcare is only meaningful when it is accessible.

As Dr. Underwood often reminds others:

"Knowledge only matters if people can access it."

It is a philosophy that continues to guide his work today.

Leadership Through ALMA

As Secretary of the Arizona Latin-American Medical Association (ALMA), Dr. Underwood continues to invest his time, expertise, and leadership in strengthening communities and supporting future generations of healthcare professionals.

His involvement reflects a broader commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and advocacy—values that have defined his career from the very beginning.

Whether working alongside physicians, researchers, policymakers, or community leaders, Dr. Underwood understands that meaningful progress is rarely achieved alone. It is built through partnerships, shared purpose, and a willingness to serve something larger than oneself.

A Legacy Still Being Written

Today, through Cardio MedSci LLC, Dr. Underwood continues to advise organizations across the life sciences and medical technology sectors while remaining engaged in efforts that advance health equity and community wellbeing.

Yet perhaps his greatest contribution cannot be measured through titles, awards, or professional accomplishments.

It can be found in the lives of patients who were improved, the communities that gained greater access to care, the innovations that reached those who needed them, and the countless individuals inspired by his example.

For Dr. Paul Underwood, leadership has never been about standing at the center of the story.

It has been about helping others move forward.

And in doing so, he has left an enduring mark on medicine, community, and the generations that will follow.
